RA Salvatore Interview

Last week, Rerollz had the fortunate opportunity to ask famed author, R.A. Salvatore a few questions about his experiences and thoughts on the MMORPG genre. In case you didn’t know, R.A. Salvatore is the author of the Drizzt series of books (among many others) and is now currently working creatively with Curt Schilling and Todd McFarlane at 38 Studios on an MMOG project code named Copernicus.

Remember, R.A. Salvatore’s answers do not reflect the ideas or design directions of 38 Studios, but they reflect his own thoughts and experiences while playing these games for the last decade or so.

So if you want to know about his thoughts on Warcraft’s WOTLK, the revenge of Wizard Salvatore and his thoughts on story telling then read the whole interview after the break. Follow the link below.

I got snowed in yesterday and because of snow I got lazy. That and digging out my car from about a foot of snow took up some time.

Anyway a few news bits to report. WOW’s next expansion, Cataclysm, looks like it will be launching sometime later this year. Probably around the time of their anniversary in November. How much more can WOW bring to the table? We’re working with 6-8 year old technology and I’ve been impressed with what Warcraft has brought to us on an old engine.

Stay tuned to Blizzard for more information, but I’ve heard rumblings that their new MMOG will be announced at this year’s Blizzcon. I can’t wait for that. It should be huge.

I’ve got a cycle with Warcraft. I resubscribe for a while, get a bunch of things accomplished, like hit max level in a new expansion, or gear up to a point where it slows down; then I usually cancel my subscription. At what point does the average person cancel their subscription with Warcraft? Is it when you can’t progress any further? Is it when you almost have everything you want? Where is the breaking point?

I hear all the time that World of Warcraft has no community outside the small group of people in your guild. That it’s full of mouth breathers and denizens of Barrens Chat that can’t function in normal society. I also hear that Warcraft is a game on rails where you can solo your way to the top and no one wants to do anything else.

Well fuck whoever says that because they’re wrong.
