Another volume of Ask Crypic has been released, this time about Star Trek Online. Read the fan submitted questions and the developer’s answers.

BreachAndClear: Will there be any missions that come up spontaneously? For instance, will Starfleet or the Klingon High Council contact me with work that needs to be done that is unrelated to missions I actively seek out?

Absolutely. Star Trek mission development is not like a standard MMO. You’re not going to go to a town and see an admiral with an exclamation point over his head, and when you click on him he tells you to go out and kill 10 Klingons and come back. That doesn’t happen in Star Trek.

Cryptic Studios’ Star Trek Online has put out a release that their game is going to follow the “prime” timeline and not the alternative that put out in the recent Star Trek theatrical release.

In the movie, two characters travel back in time from the year 2387. When Nero arrives in the year 2233, he disrupts the time continuum, creating an alternate reality from the point of his arrival. Star Trek (the new movie) takes place in this alternate reality. This is explained in the film in a conversation between Uhura and Spock on the bridge of the Enterprise.

Star Trek Online is set in the “prime” Star Trek reality. This is the timeline of the five television series and the first 10 movies. It is the world in which the Gorn attacked Cestus III, Kirk fought Khan in the Mutara Nebula, Picard explored the galaxy, the Federation fought the Dominion War, Voyager was stranded in the Delta Quadrant and Captain Archer and the crew of the NX-01 showed us how it all began.

This may please a lot of hard core Star Trek fans as their favored and time tested timeline continues.

For more information about what happened after the events that lead to the time line shift you can read up on that here.

Andrew Park of Gamespot recently had a chance to get a sneak preview of Star Trek Online currently being developed by Cryptic Studios. They had a chance to witness ship combat and away team missions along with being able to explore the galaxy just a bit.

Here is an excerpt from the article. Follow the link above to read the rest of it.

“Zinkievich suggests that at present, the game is currently planned to offer an “even split’ between away team exploration and interstellar starship exploration–the latter includes the game’s tactical, real-time starship combat system. We actually had a chance to witness an early version of the starship combat in motion, which the executive producer likened to battle between tall ships during the Age of Sail. Just like how sea captains of that era chose different types of cannon shot to damage an enemy vessel’s hull or sails, you can even use different weapon types in Star Trek Online, such as a continuous and withering stream of phaser fire to eat away at energy shields, or a salvo of photon torpedoes to tear up your foe’s exposed hull. “
