Have you heard about Global Agenda? If you’ve been reading this site then I’ve mentioned it a few times. Well I’m coming clean today; I fucking love this game. I’ve been playing it for a steady two weeks now and I haven’t slowed down which says a lot since my attention spam for most games is less than two weeks.
Now what is Global Agenda really? Is it an MMOG? Some people may say, “maybe”. People that say Guild Wars is an MMOG will say, “definitely”, and people who play EVE will probably say, “Not really”. The game is a combination of Halo and Team Fortress Two with a bunch of Guild Wars thrown in.

Last week, Rerollz had the fortunate opportunity to ask famed author, R.A. Salvatore a few questions about his experiences and thoughts on the MMORPG genre. In case you didn’t know, R.A. Salvatore is the author of the Drizzt series of books (among many others) and is now currently working creatively with Curt Schilling and Todd McFarlane at 38 Studios on an MMOG project code named Copernicus.
Remember, R.A. Salvatore’s answers do not reflect the ideas or design directions of 38 Studios, but they reflect his own thoughts and experiences while playing these games for the last decade or so.
So if you want to know about his thoughts on Warcraft’s WOTLK, the revenge of Wizard Salvatore and his thoughts on story telling then read the whole interview after the break. Follow the link below.

The easiest way I can describe Alganon is calling it a “Custom CircleMUD”. Now I doubt very many people will understand what I mean by this so I’m going to give you a quick history lesson from my early years of online gaming.
Back in the ’90s most people playing online RPGs were probably playing MUDs. There were a couple of big MUDs (Sojourn, Toril, Duris, Aardwolf, Medievia) and there were hundreds if not thousands of smaller MUDs that were people’s pet projects. People who wanted to make their own MUD with a few of their friends usually picked a base code. The most prevalent was CircleMUD with a prepacked world and four classes. We called these games “Stock MUDs” because the world was always the same but maybe it had a different name. They were always shitty MUDs and with almost nothing different to it.
The next level of MUDs were “Custom CircleMUDs” that always had potential to be fun games. Usually the owners ripped out the stock world and created their own. Sometimes they tweaked the classes and maybe added a new one. Depending on the skill of the people running the game; you could potentially have a good game.
The last level of MUDs were in a realm of their own. The most prevalent that I remember was SojournMUD (Or Duris/Toril). It had a completely original world and a complete customization of classes and mechanics but was still rooted, or was started in, the root stock code base even though it was hardly recognizable unless you knew what to look for.
Now how does this compare to today? Well the big boy on the block would be Warcraft. Complete customization with differing mechanics etc. Alganon would be the “Custom CircleMUD”. And here’s why.

DIKU games have been in existence for a long time now and have reached it’s most mature and accessible form with World of Warcraft. Every DIKU game starts you off at level one where you begin your journey to Max Level. As the genre matures and expectations of games change, the leveling process has become more and more of a burden and hindrance than a fun game element. So why have levels at all?
In recent history we’ve seen a few games launch post World of Warcraft, but for the sake of this article lets take a look at Warhammer and Aion. Both games hit the scene with amazing initial sales, Warhammer had 800+ thousand boxes sold in the first month or so, and Aion has kicked off pretty well in the western market. Where do they stand now? Warhammer is all but canceled. Their retention rate was dreadful. Nothing official has been released about Aion, but if you take the pulse of a few online communities you’ll notice people quitting in large numbers. What was a huge complaint about these games?
The grind.
