Many of you may already know, but just a while ago Mark Jacobs was let go from EA/Mythic. If you have followed anything about Warhammer you’ll also know that there are rumors saying that the North American subscription numbers are rumored to be below 100,000 and EU less than 90,000. Their “free expansion” is not very popular. If you’ve played the game you are most likely to think that the game is very poorly put together and things rarely make sense. We can go on, but now Mark Jacobs is gone and perhaps there is a little be of relief over there in Mythic’s studios?

I think it’s instinctual for the achievement driven players of most MMOGs to always to aim for getting better “stuff”. If you recognize this in yourself, it’s usual comes in the form of getting more purples; to use a World of Warcraft term. But what happens if a game becomes stale, old or boring to you? How do you get your achievement fix? Do you keep on keeping on with your game of choice, or do you try to find the next new shiny producing machine?
What brought this question to mind is a current debate that I’ve been following on several different sites regarding the upcoming MMOG, Aion. The debate in question is that if Aion is your typical Diku based game why should I play it over Warcraft? Why should I leave a known quality game for something unknown? Currently there are a large amount of players that are content with Warcraft but wouldn’t mind a new experience. However, to them, Aion is just more of the same. The other side of the argument you have the Transient MMOG Player, which is the camp I happen to fall into. You’re constantly looking for the new and better. Sometimes not necessarily a better game that’s different, but for a greener pasture with some different toys to play with.

Do you remember that Eurogamer review a while ago that caused all sort of hub-bub when they gave Darkfall a two our of ten score? Well the drama resurfaced with a new review by Eurogamer. If you recall, the lead developer, Tasos, of Darkfall complained that the first review didn’t play enough of the game to get a real feel for it. He thought it was unfair. There was a small back and forth, there were data logs being thrown about. The whole thing was amusing.

Someone from the Aionsource.com forum community pointed out a way to play Aion for free on one of the Chinese servers. The server is capped at level 30 but it’s a perfect way to test out classes and get a feel for the game inbetween beta weekends.
However there should be a warning here. This has not been tested by anyone from Rerollz.

Summer is a slow time and a busy time. Slow in MMOG news and busy time in my life. What’s going on the MMOG world these days? Well not much. For a month or so we’ve been quiet but lets sum up a few things that happened and some things to look forward to.
