Last week end we were able to visit the NY Comic Con. There were many games visible but other than Jumpgate Evolution, we wanted to check out DC Universe Online and Champion-Online.

We only had a short time to try each title out but first impression were that each game played very differently. DC Universe Online played more like an action style arcade game that can easily be played with a PS3 controller while Champ-O is played like more like a traditional MMORPG heavily borrowing from the “City of X” games.

Here is some sample gameplay from DCUO:

You can see some fast combat and some of the travel powers in action. Here are two more videos:

The one issue that may surface with DCUO is the camera angles. A few cool things you may notice are the picking up and maniuplating the environment. Picking up large items, flying with them and tossing them at enemies. Those large glowing and swirling “clouds” around the characters are defensive shields you can activate in defense mode.

Champions Online on the other hand played like a more traditional MMO where you activated powers with the 1-0 keys with the traditional mouse look. In all honesty I didn’t get to play too much, but I had the impression that it played exactly like City of Heroes and Villains but you had more settings to play in other than a city. The description of the role loot has to play was vague. Loot that you can pick up doesn’t necessarily change your outer appearance but might affect the visual affects of your powers. Power and health replenishment drop from bad guys as you kill them much like they do in a game like Fable. Here is a quick sample of the gameplay being shown at NY Comic Con. You’ll see a female martial artist fighting a giant mechanical dinosaur.

This may be a good year if you’re looking forward to a Superhero MMO. Let us see if Sony and Cryptic can deliver.

You can never go wrong with mecho-dinosaurs, IMO. It actually looked good too. =P Looking forward to more MMOs that are not fantasy-based though, that’s the key thing. Good, non-fantasy MMOs is what the market needs.
